Is there a placement in your chart that stumps you? An area that feels as if a piece of the puzzle is missing? Degree theory can help with that! This is a concept carved out by astrologer Nikola Stojanovic, and postulates that every single degree has it’s own sign association layered underneath. We’ll go over each of them together, and how this can alter the flavor of each planet on paper — but first, an example:

Someone who insists they don’t “sound like a Leo” could have an 18° Sun, which is a Virgo degree. This flavor hidden underneath could indicate they are more concerned with pragmatism than frivolity, just as likely to overthink as they are to showboat. They’re still inherently exploring the experience of ego in this lifetime and the importance of showing up, but the essence of what it means to be seen is going to change from Leo to Leo, degree to degree.

Just as you’ve got a ton of herbs in your kitchen; garlic, thyme, ginger, onion, fennel seed… Degree theory adds a new flavor to your existing chart comprehension, the same way an increase of pixels enhances a photo quality the closer you zoom in, or a bit of extra salt brings out the other flavors.

As with cooking, you won’t use every spice in every dish; I prefer using degree theory to peel back a layer in my own chart or for a dash of context in a client reading. A sprinkle of clove goes a long way, but it’s not the central flavor! In the cooking analogy, degree theory adds umami to your birth chart. (Planets would be the protein, signs are the marinade, aspects are the roux… You know me, I love an analogy!) It’s important to avoid over-reliance on specific analysis in the chart, and apply tools with the weight they carry in the larger picture; that being said, let’s dig in!

Every sign in your chart moves counterclockwise, 0 to 29 degrees, 30° total. All twelve link together in a perfect circle, 360°. Each degree is associated with a sign and specific point in a karmic journey. A hero’s journey moves from A to Z, and covers all the zigzags along the way. You can think of the numbers in order as following a similar karmic arc.

If you’re a Cancer moon but not a typical homebody, perhaps it’s at 9°, adding the flavor of Sagittarius hidden in plain sight. This could explain your desire to move often, live abroad, or travel cross country in a cozy van. As a middle number, there’s an emphasis on trial and error and exploration, because your emotional contentment in this lifetime is still being explored. This person would still want to stay close to family; in addition to their deep sensitivity and compassion, there’s a also spark of Sagittarius fire hidden under the surface.

The degree is a layer of frosting; it doesn’t change the flavor of the cake! The two most notable degrees are 0° and 29° because they represent the beginning and end of a karmic journey; the first to last page of a book, the germination of a seed to the sturdy trunk of a great oak.

“The two most notable degrees are 0° and 29° because they represent the beginning and end of a karmic journey.”

0° is the very beginning of a karmic chapter. My interpretation here is to allow it to feel like new terrain! This part of you is meant to break new ground in this life. It’s the first inhale of energy into that sign, considered to be the cusp or archway where the energy flows through an open door. It’s rulership is the sign it’s in; there’s no other flavor to mix with. If you feel as though you’re a fish out of water on the dating scene and you have 0° Venus, that could be because love and relationships are a new focus for you in this lifetime. You might also love without reservation or the trappings of usual relationship baggage, because you’re jumping in pure of heart. A bit naive at times, but unsullied in its newness, can you give yourself grace here? The beginning degree is exploratory, curious, at times hesitant or reserved. Other times it’s eager and game for anything! You might feel as though you are walking into a party where you don’t know anyone, or cracking open the first page of a book in another language. Do you dance in the room like no one’s watching or slowly inch your way to the bar?

29° is the final number, the anaretic degree ushering in a culmination of fate. It often carries a sense of urgency to complete and master a story. It feels important to “get it right this time” or bring it on home. This ain’t your first rodeo. It has the same energy as getting through the last chapters of your manuscript so you can type out the end on the final page; you’re closing out specific patterns or lessons. Some astrologers associate it with conflict or strife, but how the urgency shows up is different for everyone. 29° degree placements are here to cash a big karmic check they’ve been saving up on for lifetimes, but first they have to remember where to spend it! I’ve have clients with a 29° midheaven who were dynamites in career but frequently burned it all down because their work didn’t feel “quite right.” Do not underestimate the karmic pressure we can internalize here! Placements at 29° can feel wise and restless, powerful and burdened. You’ve done so much to get to this point! You want to be implementing and building on the natural flow of momentum in your life where a 29° placement is concerned.

Early degree placements are considered at the beginning of a new pattern or story, while later degree placements have “been around the block” and are focused more on implementation and execution rather than exploration or trial and error. My personal feeling on it is (0 is the fresh start), 1-7 are just getting the party started, 8-14 are finding their footing, 15-21 are shoring up their abilities, 22-28 are growing mastery and maturity (29 is final integration). That’s not part of official degree theory, but it’s how I mentally categorize them in groups of seven! (It is already a karmic number and divides into 28 four times, there are four quadrants of the chart, etc. I always look for special numbers when distilling my own analysis, but use what works for you!)
